Overview
The Folsom Field is an outdoor stadium located at the University of Colorado in Boulder. It has been the home of the Buffalo’s football team since 1924. Also known as the “hilltop,” this stadium is the pride and joy of Boulder making aesthetics, reliability and workmanship the top priorities for this project.
Problem
Frequently exposed to very cold, dry, and windy winters, the concrete stairs at the Folsom Field suffered from corrosion due to freeze. Concrete is porous, so whenever it rains or snows, the water percolates through the concrete. This causes the concrete to break when the water freezes. Needless to say, repairs were being made every two years.
The materials for this project needed to be:
• Corrosion Resistant: It will help save time and money by significantly cutting down on maintenance.
• Slip Resistant: Being a football stadium, liquids are spilled on the stair treads every game. This is why a slip resistant surface is key for this installation. While traditional materials use a temporary thick grip tape on each stair to prevent slipping, Fibergrate products offer a slip resistant surface that remains safe even when wet.
Solution
After having to repair the stairs every two years, this application needed to be low maintenance and provide long service life. This is why the Fiberplate Stair Tread Covers were the perfect candidate for this project. These tread covers provide solid, slip resistant footing for existing treads that are still structurally sound, helping the client save time and money in the installation process and maintenance.
The standard color is dark gray with a highly visible safety yellow nosing; however, since this football field is the house of the “Buffs,” the tread covers were ordered in CU Buffaloes logo colors, black and gold. The client is very happy with the installation not only because of the quality and corrosion resistance of our product but also Fibergrate’s sales representative supervised and participated in the installation of these Fiberplate Stair Tread Covers, backing up the quality of our products with the customer service we deliver in every project. Repairs every two years will no longer be necessary for this client which is why Fibergrate is ready to participate in the bidding to cover all of the stair treads in the stadium.
